Did you know July is National Watermelon Month? Dr. Mercola has much to say about this hydrating wonder. He names at least three pain reducers and many other valuables stored away in this juicy treat. If that is not enough, he touts high antioxidants, vitamin C and lycopene as only a few reasons to partake of ruddy sweetness.
Sadly, most of us tend to only eat red (or orange) fleshy portions when there are many health promoting reasons to eat rinds. I will let you read his info at your leisure look for “6 water melon facts” on Mercola’s web site. Suffice it to say here, that these relatives of pumpkins and cucumbers can transport iron, protein, fiber and one particular blood building amino acid.
Pictures are said to be worth more than a thousand words. Hopefully, this one will inspire folks to chop watermelon rinds, squeeze lime, add cinnamon and water for a cool treat to beat Florida heat!
- Remember to wash well, the outside, before slicing.
- Squeeze lime and toss
- For added flavor, I like chunking fleshy portions and sprinkling with cinnamon.
Not only is it delicious, but since cinnamon is a natural preservative, so it keeps better! Enjoy!
